Excavations since at the Fountain of Youth Park 8-SJ have located what we believe to be the site of the Spanish settlement established by Menendez in Some features at the site may be related to a fortification, however this interpretation is ambiguous. The archaeological evidence is also ambiguous. There is no clear evidence for a moat; but there is evidence for a very large sixteenth century wood and thatch building.
All of these factors probably left only fragmentary archaeological signatures of the Timucua town and the Menendez settlement. Shovel testing, auger sampling and test pit excavations throughout the property have shown that the sixteenth century Spanish presence at the site is restricted to an area of about meters by 70 meters. It is separated from the moat at 8-SJ the La Leche Shrine by some 90 meters of what is today marshland.
The Spanish concentrated their occupation between two existing pre-Columbian shell middens, which radiocarbon dating has shown to have been occupied for more than 2, years when Menendez arrived.

At the same time, the Internet has enabled those who seek lucre from supposed anti-aging products to reach new consumers with ease. Alarmed by these trends, scientists who study aging, including the three of us, have issued a position statement containing this warning: no currently marketed intervention—none—has yet been proved to slow, stop or reverse human aging, and some can be downright dangerous.
While the public is bombarded by hype and lies, many biologists are intensively studying the underlying nature of aging in the belief that their research will eventually suggest ways to slow its progression and to thereby postpone infirmity and improve quality of life. But anyone purporting to offer an anti-aging product today is either mistaken or lying. Here’s the full position statement. Here we state the case as we see it, speaking for ourselves. What Aging Is This damage gradually impairs the functioning of cells, tissues, organs and organ systems, thereby increasing vulnerability to disease and giving rise to the characteristic manifestations of aging, such as a loss of muscle and bone mass, a decline in reaction time, compromised hearing and vision, and re- duced elasticity of the skin.
This accretion of molecular damage comes from many sources, including, ironically, the life-sustaining processes involved in converting the food we eat into usable energy. As the energy generators of cells mitochondria operate, they emit destructive, oxidizing molecules known as free radicals. Most of the damage caused by these reactive molecules gets repaired, but not all.
I’ve heard this question on the occasions I find myself watching infomercials very late at night. If you have not had the opportunity to view these, you have missed out on some wonderful television. Aging movie stars, athletes and just plain folks provide entertaining, if not educational, testimonials on a host of products.
Not surprisingly, many infomercials are for products that promise to help you lose weight, stay fit and generally keep or regain youthful vigor. Among these products are those containing human growth hormone, or products that claim to “stimulate” the production of human growth hormone in the body. Human growth hormone, or HGH, is secreted by the pituitary gland.

The search for the elusive fountain of youth is described in historical texts, dating back to the times of ancient China and Mesopotamia. And we are still searching.
For another, he credits a heart attack he suffered when he was 40 for inspiring him to work “pretty hard at staying healthy” and in shape. But ask him what he knows about whether his family tree may have played a part in his long life, and Nielsen, like many others, is at a loss. He feels there are conflicting examples among relatives — neither of his parents lived nearly as long as he has, though he has a sister who died at 94, and a healthy niece who is The answer to that question is not just an unknown curiosity for laypeople; it has long been coveted by researchers who study aging.
University of Utah researchers now say they have new findings, published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications, adding some clarity on the issue. The study concluded that “longevity is heritable, but that primarily applies to persons from families where multiple members are among the top 10 percent survivors of their birth cohort,” said U. Lead author Niels van den Berg, a professor in the Department of Biomedical Data Sciences at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, said by using a 10 percent threshold, “we observed … the more long-lived relatives you have, the lower your hazard of dying at any point in life.
The exhaustive project examined the genealogical trees of , people belonging to 20, families, drawing from records of people who lived as far back as Researchers used two large data sets — one based in the Netherlands, the other is the Utah Population Database. Adams wrote that the results collected from Utah and the Netherlands were “similar … despite the very different environmental circumstances.
The high quality of the two population databases was considered extremely important for the strength of the study because “this field is filled with false signals of people claiming to live to remarkable ages, and often it is just bad record keeping,” according to Smith, who is also a professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Studies and Population Sciences at the U.

Though little is known about his family, he was of noble birth and served in the Spanish military from a young age. He first came to the Americas as a “gentleman volunteer” with Christopher Columbus ‘s second expedition in He was authorized to explore the neighboring island of Puerto Rico in and for serving as the first Governor of Puerto Rico by appointment of the Spanish crown in He landed somewhere along Florida’s east coast, then charted the Atlantic coast down to the Florida Keys and north along the Gulf coast, perhaps as far as Charlotte Harbor.
Though in popular culture he was supposedly searching for the Fountain of Youth , there is no contemporary evidence to support the story, which all modern historians call a myth. He would not return to Puerto Rico for two years. However, the native Calusa people fiercely resisted the incursion, and he was seriously wounded in a skirmish. The colonization attempt was abandoned, and its leader died from his wounds soon after returning to Cuba.
According to John J. He gave Florida its name and went on to become the first governor of Puerto Rico. He served as a page at the court of Aragon, where he learned social skills, religion and military tactics. He eventually became a soldier and fought against the the Moors in Granada. His efforts paid off and he prospered well, selling produce and livestock to Spanish ships returning home.
On a return trip to Spain around this time, he married a woman named Leonora, with whom he would eventually have three children.

During his twilight years, American author Mark Twain noted that “life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of 80 and gradually approach Twain’s quip was only one of many complaints about aging that have been recorded for as long as humans have dreaded the downside of a long life.
The ancient Greek poet Homer called old age “loathsome,” and William Shakespeare termed it “hideous winter. So it’s not hard to understand why there have always been hopes and rumors that something soon to be discovered—magic waters, say, or maybe stem cell research —will do away with old age. Alexander the Great, who conquered most of the known world before he died around B. During the 12th century A. But the name linked most closely to the search for a fountain of youth is 16th-century Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, who allegedly thought it would be found in Florida.
